Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 48904

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clinton L. Myers (MCSN: 283343), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Leader of an Artillery Forward Observation Party of the First Battalion, Thirteenth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 22 February 1945. After the observer had become a casualty, Sergeant Myers assumed his tasks and supported the advance of the infantry with skillfully directed artillery fire, working his way forward under heavy fire against increasing hostile resistance. When our forces were compelled to withdraw because of heavy casualties and intense cross-fire from unprotected flanks, he pushed ahead to a position with the leading elements where, from an exposed position, he successfully covered the withdrawal of the infantry and the evacuation of the wounded. Although his position became progressively more dangerous as the withdrawal continued, he boldly remained at his post, calling for fires which, at times, were close enough to endanger his own observation post. His initiative, determination and aggressive devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on Sergeant Myers and the United States Naval Service.
