The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Glen E. Mulligan (MCSN: 375376), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Commander of Company B, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 24 September 1944. Observing a well concealed anti-tank weapon delivering accurate fire against our troops, Sergeant Mulligan immediately climbed upon his tank to direct his gunner in delivering return fire against the enemy gun and, although his tank sustained several hits during the action, courageously continued in his gallant efforts until the hostile weapon was destroyed. Noticing the Japanese preparing to fire a large caliber anti-tank gun on our forces later in the day, he exposed himself in the turret of his tank to direct his men in delivering accurate fire and destroy the hostile gun before it could fire. By his courage, initiative and devotion to duty, Sergeant Mulligan upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
