The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Paul A. Mullett (MCSN: 316919), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 16 June 1944. When heavy enemy machine-gun and mortar fire halted his company during a perilous advance over open terrain, Private First Class Mullett fearlessly risked his life to assist in removing casualties to a place of safety then, despite wounds received while carrying out his perilous mission, returned to the field to continue the fight. With his comrades still pinned down by a fanatic enemy, he again pressed forward under the intense barrage to rescue another fallen Marine and, although wounded a second time by a sudden burst of hostile shellfire, succeeded in carrying the helpless man to a safe area. By his daring initiative, great personal valor and cool and courageous action in the face of extreme danger, Private First Class Mullett contributed to the saving of many lives and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
