Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 56883

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ernest Molina (MCSN: 839284), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Headquarters and Service Company, Third Engineer Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. Volunteering to operate a lightly armored bulldozer to build approaches for tanks to an enemy pocket of resistance, Private First Class Molina spear-headed the advance over extremely rough terrain into strong hostile defense, persevering in his mission despite repeated attempts by the enemy to destroy his vehicle with demolition charges. Later, when an exploding demolition charge caused a leak resulting in the overheating of the engine, he dismounted beside a protecting tank and, under sniper and machine gun fire, removed a can of water from the vehicle, filled the radiator and, thereafter continued his mission. By his outstanding courage and determination in the face of grave danger, Private First Class Molina contributed materially to the advance of the tank company against the hostile stronghold. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
