The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Forest H. Miller (MCSN: 849281), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader of the First Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, on 16 April 1945. When his gunner was wounded during an enemy counterattack, Corporal Miller unhesitatingly manned the weapon. Refusing to be evacuated after he had received painful wounds and his machine gun had been put out of action by a hit through the receiver, he picked up his rifle and some grenades and, crawling forward to a firing position, aggressively engaged the enemy until hostile fire damaged his rifle. Boldly remaining in his position, Corporal Miller continued to engage the enemy by throwing hand grenades, thereby contributing materially to the success of the operation. His initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
