The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur L. Miles (MCSN: 340215), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 2 October 1944. When his outpost was attacked twice during the night by the Japanese, Private First Class Miles bravely remained in his position under intense enemy grenade, mortar and rifle fire after other Marines in his and the adjoining outpost had been either wounded or forced out of position. Unassisted, he broke up the organized attack by throwing hand grenades and, when these were gone, directed accurate carbine fire, forcing the enemy to withdraw and permitting the front lines to reform. His exemplary courage, fortitude and aggressive devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
