The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Michael Mikos (MCSN: 844054), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Automatic Rifleman serving with the Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, from 15 June to 8 July 1944. Landing on the fire-swept beach during assault operations on D-Day, Private First Class Mikos repeatedly volunteered his services in extremely hazardous missions in forward areas throughout the period of fierce combat action which followed our invasion of this strategic enemy base. When a portion of his platoon was pinned down by merciless Japanese machine-gun fire on 8 July, he remained steadfast at his post under a continuous enemy barrage and, firing his automatic weapon with determined aggressiveness, poured a relentless stream of deadly bullets on the Japanese position until he fell, mortally wounded by a savage burst from enemy guns. By his fearless initiative, resolute fortitude and indomitable fighting spirit in the face of savage, unceasing opposition, Private First Class Mikos contributed materially to the ultimate conquest of this vital Japanese stronghold, and his great personal courage and valiant conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
