The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Quinton Meyer (MCSN: 0-32025), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. When an assault company became isolated from the rest of the Battalion and was surrounded by hostile forces on three sides with the ocean on the fourth, Second Lieutenant Meyer voluntarily waded across a treacherous reef, past enemy beach defenses and through an area infested with hostile snipers and infiltrating groups in order to deliver a vitally important message to this isolated unit. After swimming two-hundred yards after dark through mined and mortar-swept water, he returned to his Battalion Command Post and reported the successful delivery of the message. Continually exposed to intense hostile rifle, machine-gun, mortar and artillery fire during the entire period of this assault, he skillfully directed the Naval gunfire, thereby contributing materially to the annihilation of the enemy forces and to the success of our units in this mission. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
