The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wayne T. Marsh (MCSN: 821079), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Demolition Specialist of Company A, Fourth Engineer Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 12 March 1945. Volunteering for booby-trap removal duty, Private First Class Marsh discovered, investigated and disarmed all types of enemy antipersonnel and anti-vehicle devices and, on 11 March, attempted to silence an enemy pillbox with demolitions. Unable to gain access to the position which was delivering heavy fire, he directed a tank into position to bring fire on the enemy emplacements and, riding on the outside of the tank, directed its fire until the hostile positions were silenced. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Marsh and the United States Naval Service.
