The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edwin H. Magee (MCSN: 398948), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Section Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 10 March 1945. Placing a machine gun in an exposed and perilous position in order to obtain maximum performance, Corporal Magee and a companion manned the weapon whose position the Japanese had located and assaulted several times during the night. Although in one attempt the enemy threw a hand grenade into the foxhole where he had taken the gun to protect it from their fire, and the exploding grenade killed his assistant and wounded him, Corporal Magee again set the gun in position and succeeded in killing five Japanese during the night. His courageous determination and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
