    August 28, 1942 – January 16, 1943

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Technical Sergeant Dermott H. MacDonnell (MCSN: 385885), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while in charge of special equipment on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, during attacks by enemy Japanese forces from 28 August 1942, to 16 January 1943. Entrusted with the first Aviation search radar which reached Guadalcanal, Master Technical Sergeant MacDonnell accompanied it ashore and supervised its erection, maintenance, and operation. In spite of continual enemy raids from bombers and surface vessels and of land-based artillery fire, he steadfastly remained at his exposed and hazardous post near the flying fields, forwarding information which contributed greatly to the efficiency of counter measures against the enemy. His skill, courage, and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
