The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Paul C. MacDonald, Jr. (MCSN: 0-21474), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 1 August 1944. Halted by fierce Japanese machine-gun and rifle Fire while leading his platoon, Second Lieutenant MacDonald unhesitatingly risked his life in a daring attempt to save a seriously wounded Marine who was lying helpless in the lane of enemy fire and, although struck by hostile bullets several times as he crossed the open field, valiantly persisted in his heroic effort until he fell, mortally wounded. By his resolute initiative, cool courage and self-sacrificing conduct on behalf of another, Second Lieutenant MacDonald was an inspiration to his men and upheld the highest traditions of the United states Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
