The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George A. Little (MCSN: 453954), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Squad Leader of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines (Reinforced), Fifth Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 29 June 1944. When his Battalion was pinned down by machine-gun and mortar fire from enemy key installations approximately two hundred yards distant, Sergeant Little immediately organized a seven-man patrol and, repeatedly exposing himself to hostile gunfire, led an attack against the enemy stronghold, contributing in large measure to the destruction of twenty enemy personnel, four machine guns and one mortar without loss to his own patrol. By his courage and leadership, Sergeant Little was instrumental in enabling his Battalion to carry out its mission, and his devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
