The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John A. Law (MCSN: 929683), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Armored Bulldozer Operator of Headquarters and Service Company, First Engineer Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 May 1945. Assigned the mission of repairing a road for use by our tanks during a proposed advance later in the day, Private First Class Law courageously drove his bulldozer down into a valley which was an impact area for enemy mortar fire and which was under direct observation from an enemy gun firing down the valley. Moving beyond the furthermost point penetrated by our tanks, he filled in tank traps and shell holes and, although drawing heavy automatic small-arms and mortar fire, continued at his courage and zealous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
