The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert E. Kreider (MCSN: 905510), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a Rifle Platoon of Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 3 May 1945. Braving enemy fire, hand grenades and satchel charges, being hurled from the hill top while his company was pinned down, Private First Class Kreider crawled to the top of the ridge and from this exposed position, killed a number of the enemy, thereby inspiring the other men in his unit to advance to the ridge top and secure the objective. His courageous fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
