The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Thomas P. Kenny (MCSN: 436162), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the THIRD Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on December 17, 1943. Voluntarily risking his life in the face of withering hostile machine-gun and mortar fire, Corporal Kenny boldly proceeded to within thirty yards of enemy lines to render first aid to a seriously wounded Marine during a fierce engagement against a strong Japanese position. Skillfully treating his injured comrade, he quickly carried him to a less exposed position, remaining there with him until it was safe to return to the forward aid station. Corporal Kenny’s splendid initiative, courageous determination and great personal valor in the face of grave peril contributed materially to the saving of a life and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
