Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 1180 (March 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Robert F. Jones, Jr. (MCSN: 0-17278), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 7 July 1944. Replacing a wounded gunner to whom he gave first aid during a bitter enemy counterattack on his battery position, First Lieutenant Jones fought his machine gun valiantly until all ammunition was expended, then fired his pistol until his supply of bullets was exhausted. Sending for more ammunition, he continued his audacious, single-handed attack until he fell, mortally wounded. By his zealous efforts and intrepid courage, First Lieutenant Jones had contributed materially to the ultimate success of our vital mission on this strategically important island, and his unflinching devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
