The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert J. Johnson (MCSN: 1051952), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 3 November 1950. Assigned the mission of leading his platoon in an attack against a strong hostile position near Sudong, Corporal Johnson fearlessly exposed himself to heavy enemy small arms, machine gun and mortar fire as he led his squad forward in the assault. Although suffering from multiple wounds inflicted by hostile machine gun fire during the action, he courageously continued to lead his squad in closing with the enemy, occupying the objective and, after the position was secured, submitted to medical treatment. By his forceful and inspiring leadership, aggressive determination and heroic efforts in the face of heavy odds, Corporal Johnson contributed materially to the success of his company’s assigned mission and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
