The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Warrant Officer Harry L. Hundley, Jr. (MCSN: 0-16534), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while in command of a 37-mm. Gun Platoon attached to the Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 22 June 1944. Volunteering the use of his platoon as vitally needed infantry, Warrant Officer Hundley skillfully negotiated a treacherous cliff, leading a voluntary patrol in a daring attempt to knock out enemy machine guns enfilading the battalion front and, from an exposed vantage point, designating rocket and machine gun targets to his men. Mortally wounded by sniper fire while carrying out his vital task, Warrant Officer Hundley, by his heroic fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of peril, had contributed essentially to the ultimate success of our mission on this island, and his tenacious devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
