Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 44965

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles L. Huber (MCSN: 510732), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 14 March 1945. When a numerically superior hostile force launched a night counter attack, Private First Class Huber fought gallantly with his squad to repulse the attack. During the fierce fight the enemy reached a point within twenty-five yards of our lines and delivered intense small arms fire and a hand grenade barrage. When a grenade fell into Private First Class Huber’s foxhole, he instantly seized it and threw it part way out of the hole before it exploded and wounded him seriously, thereby saving the other occupants of the foxhole from injury. Despite the pain from his wounds, he remained with his squad and helped to direct its fire until the Japanese had been driven off. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
