The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alan Hopwood (MCSN: 808428), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands on 31 July 1944. When one of his comrades was wounded, Private First Class Hopwood crawled in front of the lines under heavy enemy fire to pull the man to safety and later when the rest of the machine gun squad had been either killed or wounded, kept the weapon in action throughout the rest of the night, thereby contributing materially to the success of our forces in repelling a heavy enemy counter attack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Hopwood and the United States Naval Service.
