Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6881

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Warrick G. Hoopes (MCSN: 0-7054), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Peleliu, Palau Islands on 19 September 1944. Severely wounded when strong infiltrating hostile forces attacked his command post with hand grenades killing or wounding many personnel, Captain Hoopes remained with his men until the enemy had been repulsed and then ably supervised the evacuation of the many wounded. Later, after reorganizing his command post, he boldly moved to a front line location to direct his company and throughout a night of bitter fighting, maintained personal contact with his men. Remaining with his unit until he was evacuated the next morning, Captain Hoopes contributed materially to the success of our operations in this area. His courage, tactical skill and unselfish devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
