The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Cloyd V. Hines (MCSN: 345250), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on September 13-14, 1942. While his unit was being subjected to its most severe attack, Corporal Hines rendered invaluable service to his platoon leader by his brilliant control of the men in his section and by his exemplary and inspiring conduct. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he encouraged and assisted his squad, keeping them supplied with ammunition and repairing weapons that had jammed or were otherwise out of action. On one occasion, when an English speaking enemy officer confused our men by giving the order, “Cease Firing” Corporal Hines boldly advance and bayoneted the Japanese officer. His heroic devotion to duty throughout his action, in which he was seriously wounded, reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
