The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George E. Hinds (MCSN: 354152), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Assistant Squad Leader of Weapons Company, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Guam, Mariana Islands on 2 August 1944. Harassed by infiltrating hostile troops, Corporal Hinds immediately assumed charge of his quad in the absence of the leader and regained contact with friendly troops on his right flank. Attacked by a Japanese soldier while receiving instruction over the telephone, he grasped his rifle and killed the enemy and later, while carrying an unconscious wounded Marine over his shoulder, encountered and fatally wounded another hostile soldier. His courageous initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and unswerving devotion to duty reflect the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
