The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Perry L. Hewer (MCSN: 326707), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 2 July 1944. When a column of twenty-one enemy soldiers advanced toward his position, Corporal Hewer ordered his men to hold their fire until the Japanese were within twenty yards and, directing the full fire power of his men, completely destroyed the hostile force. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
