The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert L. Heuman (MCSN: 865172), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while assisting the Officer in Charge of Company C, Sixth Engineer Battalion, SIXTH Marine Division during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 10 June 1945. While participating in the construction of a three hundred and fifty foot Bailey bridge across Naha Harbor on the main supply route for two Marine divisions, Sergeant Heuman was wounded by the same explosion which wounded and blew the Officer in Charge into swift currents below. Disregarding his personal safety, he plunged in to aid the helpless officer After having his wounds treated he refused to be evacuated and returned to carry out his duties in the construction assignment, thereby contributing materially to the rapid completion of the bridge and to the success of the operations on Oruku Peninsula.
