Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 100 (March 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Luther J. Hebert (MCSN: 348421), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a 60-mm. Mortar Section serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands from 21 to 28 July 1944. Calm and courageous in the face of a terrific enemy counter attack, Platoon Sergeant Hebert continually exposed himself to violent hostile fire to observe more advantageously the accuracy of his mortar weapons and, fearlessly moving from one position to another during the night, delivered deadly accurate fire against the enemy, thereby contributing materially to the frustration of the hostile counter attacks and the infliction of numerous losses. On 28 July, displaying consistent aggressiveness, he made a determined effort to capture a Japanese officer but was mortally wounded during the brave attempt. Platoon Sergeant Hebert’s valiant disregard for personal safety and his heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
