The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Joseph A. Henger (MCSN: 402177), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas on 20 June 1944. Exercising prompt initiative when an explosion and resultant fires occurred in a vital ammunition dump, Corporal Henger fearlessly entered the danger area where large quantities of dynamite, artillery and mortar ammunition were stored and, working desperately in a valiant attempt to isolate the burning area, fought the raging flames with determined energy until fatally injured by a second explosion. His courageous action, resolute fortitude and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of extreme peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
