The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gregory T. Henesy (MCSN: 807776), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Scout Sergeant with a Forward Observation Team of Battery A, First Battalion, Fifteenth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Naha, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 10 May 1945. When the Officer in Charge of his team was seriously wounded and pinned down by intense hostile machine gun fire, Corporal Henesy voluntarily crawled with a stretcher over one hundred yards under intense enemy fire to the wounded officer. Observing that the injured man needed immediate medical attention, he then led three men in carrying him out of the area which was being swept by hostile machine gun fire. After reorganizing his team, he led them forward through heavy enemy fire to the front lines where he was able to bring artillery fire in support of the advancing infantry. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
