The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harry L. Helm (MCSN: 300820), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area on January 3, 1944. Assuming command of the platoon in the absence of his leader, Sergeant Helm led the men forward despite unfamiliar , enemy infested terrain and dense jungle undergrowth and through his dauntless courage and inspiring leadership forced a stream crossing under intense fire from hostile machine guns on the opposite bank. Upon affecting the hazardous crossing, he promptly organized his unit, skillfully coordinating its fire and enabling his platoon to hold its positions and provide cover for other troops crossing the stream. Sergeant Helm’s splendid initiative and unswerving valor under extremely dangerous combat conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Unites States Naval Service.
