The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain John Edgar Heath (MCSN: 0-10983), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while directing a tank assault of the FIRST Marine Division against enemy Japanese forces at Natamo Point, Cape Gloucester, New Britain on January 23, 1944. After his .30 caliber and 75-mm. ammunition was expended, Captain Heath, voluntarily exposing himself to devastating hostile fire, mounted a .50 caliber machine gun in the turret of his stank to aid a unit of riflemen who were pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. Displaying expert marksmanship, he steadfastly continued to man his weapon until the Japanese had been routed from the area. Captain Heath’s daring initiative, unwavering determination and valiant fighting spirit were an inspiration to all men participating in the engagement, and his heroic devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
