The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant George W. Haynes (MCSN: 0-28417), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company L, Second Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 21 February 1945. When one of his men fell seriously wounded by a volley of fire from hostile snipers, First Lieutenant Haynes braved an enemy hand grenade barrage to move forward and evacuate the wounded man. Picking the casualty up bodily, he carried him to a safe position thirty yards to the rear and administered medical aid until all corpsman arrived. By his courage, initiative and inspiring action under hostile fire, First Lieutenant Haynes upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
