The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frederick V Harris (MCSN: 330555), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands on 15 September 1944. Wounded in the arm while making a hazardous fourteen hundred yard advance across the airfield, Private First Class Harris faltered momentarily then suddenly aware of the source of the machine gun fire courageously charged forward, directing the other members of his fire team toward the concealed enemy pill box until mortally wounded. Private First Class Harris’ inspiring conduct, aggressive fighting spirit and self-sacrificing devotion to duty under extremely perilous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
