The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James G. Hall (MCSN: 351522), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Raider Battalion in action against Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on 7 August 1942. Undeterred by a devastating barrage of hostile machine gun and sniper fire from concealed positions in cliff commanding the shore line, Private Hall unhesitatingly risked his life to rescue his platoon leader who was lying wounded in an exposed position. Although a comrade had been killed in one of two prior unsuccessful rescue attempts, Private Hall worked his way forward under a hail of enemy fire and reaching the platoon leader only to find that he was dead from the burst of a second hostile shell, move the body to safety. By his courage and unselfish efforts in behalf of another at great risk to his own life, Private Hall upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
