The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant James W. Hackleman (MCSN: 0-39542), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 10 May 1945. During his platoons assault against heavily fortified hostile positions situated on top of a steep ridge, Second Lieutenant Hackleman courageously moved to a position within fifty yards of the enemy strong point before sustaining wounds that halted his advance. Refusing evacuation although suffering extreme pain he remained in his hazardous position in the cave of the enemy’s continuing fire and directed the fire of his platoon. Wounded again while directing the action of his troops, Second Lieutenant Hackleman continued to lead his men until ordered to report for evacuation. His bravery, able leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
