The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clarence B. Haag (MCSN: 435341), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of a Platoon of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 2 May 1945. When his platoon was pinned down by heavy enemy fire, Corporal Haag voluntarily risked his life in two attempted rescues only to have the men succumb to their wounds before he could carry them to safety. Again exposing himself to the hostile fire, he successfully rescued a wounded corpsman. On 5 May, after a heavy barrage of enemy artillery fire had caused casualties in his platoon, he immediately organized a stretcher bearer team and supervised the evacuation of the wounded. By his initiative, resourcefulness and courageous devotion to duty, Corporal Haag upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
