The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Norman E. Groman (MCSN: 366672), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader of Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima , Volcano Islands, 22 March 1945. When a wounded Marine fell forward of his position in a completely exposed and open area, Corporal Groman voluntarily left his covered position to run to the aid of the man and drag him to the partially defiladed position. After administering emergency aid until a corpsman arrived to finish treatment, he picked the wounded man up and traversed twenty-five yards of open terrain under enemy machine-gun fire to take the man to safety. On at least two other occasions, he again risked his own life to rescue wounded men under heavy hostile fire. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
