The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Kenneth B. Gregory (MCSN: 289249), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Peleliu, Palau Islands, 29 September 1944. When the supply to and evacuation from the company had become impossible due to enemy fire from caves which wounded several men, Sergeant Gregory volunteered to ride a tank and direct its fire into the caves, Despite hostile fire, he rode on the outside of the tank and directed effective fire which neutralized the enemy positions. By his courageous action, Sergeant Gregory enabled the supply route to be reopened and the wounded men evacuated, and his conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
