The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold F. Greene (MCSN: 956988), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a Marine Rifle Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Ryukyu Islands, 3 April 1945. When intense enemy small-arms fire from a concealed position killed his group leader and held up his company, which was operating as a combat patrol in densely wooded mountainous terrain, Private First Class Greene unhesitatingly ran forward to locate the emplacement and, in the face of hostile fire, destroyed the enemy with hand grenades. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
