The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Grana (MCSN: 810765), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, 24 June 1944. Fearlessly risking his own life to attempt the rescue of a fallen Marine, Private First Class Grana unhesitatingly crossed the open fire-swept area and administered first aid to his wounded comrade, then working tirelessly and with cool courage, carried him up a steep hill to a safe area. Subsequently he returned with an automatic weapon, he delivered a steady stream of shattering fire against hostile positions, remaining steadfast at his gun until seriously wounded. By his daring initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and fearless determination in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Grana saved the life of a man who otherwise might have perished, and contributed to the success of our operation against the enemy in this vital war area. His zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
