The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Will W. Field (MCSN: 933521), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Runner in a Rifle Platoon of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 2 May 1945. Discovering a well-concealed enemy mortar position while carrying a message to an adjacent unit, Private First Class Field skillfully destroyed the hostile emplacement and the crew, thereby enabling his platoon to advance and seize its objective. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
