The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Thomas P. Driscoll (MCSN: 267552), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as member of the First Parachute Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Gavutu, Solomon Islands, on August 7, 1942. Courageously abandoning his own comparatively safe position, Platoon Sergeant Driscoll fought his way through withering hostile fire to hazardous exposed positions and, with tenacious determination, dragged two severely wounded Marines to cover, sustaining wounds fatal to himself as he effected this heroic rescue. Platoon Sergeant Driscoll’s unflinching acceptance of extreme personal danger in order to assist his injured comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
