The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Leo A. Dettor (MCSN: 432647), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 May 1945. When his company was retarded by intense and accurate enemy machine-gun fire emanating from a large reinforced concrete pillbox, Corporal Dettor, assisted by another Marine, assaulted the position across open terrain, silencing the weapon with hand grenades and then entering the position to destroy the five Japanese occupants. By his courageous actions and valiant devotion to duty, Corporal Dettor materially assisted in the capture of commanding ground which insured the successful completion of his company’s mission, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
