The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Anthony J. Dawid (MCSN: 357268), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Driver of a Flame Thrower equipped Amphibian Tractor of the First Amphibian Tractor Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 16 September 1944. When his tractor was hit by a burst of enemy fire as he carried out operations in advance of our front lines, Corporal Dawid courageously remained in the damaged vehicle and, although one track was blown off, succeeded in slowly maneuvering it out of the forward area in the face of intense hostile artillery, mortar and small-arms fire to keep it from falling into enemy hands. By his courage, initiative and devotion to duty throughout, Corporal Dawid upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
