Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 898 (February 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Warren D. Davies (MCSN: 298344), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 3 July 1944. With his platoon sustaining heavy casualties while advancing across an open clearing and assaulting a steep ridge held by approximately one hundred Japanese reported to be Imperial Marines, Sergeant Davies skillfully deployed his few remaining men and gained the heights despite withering fire from enemy rifles and machine guns. While consolidating his position and reorganizing his men preparatory to routing the enemy from their entrenchments on top of the crest, Sergeant Davies was severely wounded and evacuated, succumbing to his wounds 5 July 1944. By his inspiring and skillful leadership and cool courage under fire, he had enabled his company to gain a position from which its objective was taken with ease, thus contributing essentially to the success of our vital mission in this strategically important area. His unflinching devotion to duty throughout this action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
