The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Lewis J. Cox (MCSN: 0-27660), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 21 May 1945. During the fierce battle for Sugar Loaf Hill, First Lieutenant Cox courageously led his men in the face of intense hostile artillery, mortar and small arms fire in a furious assault. Although subjected to repeated enemy counter attacks after occupying the hill, he ably directed his men in holding their positions. Seriously wounded in the course of the action, he steadfastly refused to be evacuated until ordered by his Commanding Officer. By his bravery, leadership and devotion to duty throughout, Fist Lieutenant Cox upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
