The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Edward L. Clark (MCSN: 240112), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as non-commissioned Officer in charge of the Command Post of Company B, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands on 19 September 1944. Observing two men lying wounded in a listening post beyond our troops during a heavy enemy barrage of artillery and mortar fire along the front lines, Gunnery Sergeant Clark dashed forward despite the concentrations of high explosive falling close by and carried one unconscious man to the Command Post. Disregarding serious wounds sustained on this trip and refusing aid he again ran forward through the fire swept zone and succeeded in rescuing the second wounded man. By his perseverance and cool courage under fire, Gunnery Sergeant Clark saved the lives of the two Marines. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services.
