The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Kermit Chaney (MCSN: 878672), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 17 June 1944. Attacking approaching enemy tanks with anti-tank grenades during a hostile assault, Private First Class Chaney assisted in halting and destroying at least one tank in his platoon area. Continuing to render valuable service, he braved hostile fire to assist in the evacuation of wounded men from his area. His courage, initiative and zealous devotion duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
