The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raybon M. Chambers (MCSN: 294739), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Wire Section Chief of a Communication Platoon serving with the Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Piva Forks, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on November 24, 1943. With his entire crew killed or wounded by a sudden, vicious Japanese attack while attempting to establish telephonic communications among front line companies and outposts, Sergeant Chambers valiantly continued alone, and, fearlessly exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, single-handedly laid a telephone line throughout the entire battalion. By his daring initiative, courageous determination and unswerving devotion to duty in the face of grave peril, Sergeant Chambers contributed to the success of our forces in that area, and his valiant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
