The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Luther E. Caughron (MCSN: 917240), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Peleliu in the Palau Group, on 11 October 1944. Fearlessly exposing himself to intense Japanese sniper fire during a determined assault on a fiercely-defended enemy ridge, Private First Class Caughron boldly advanced through the deadly barrages. Gaining a strategic observation post, he skillfully directed the powerful, accurate fire of his platoon against the hostile positions, annihilating a large number of Japanese and forcing the remainder to withdraw, thereby averting heavy casualties to his unit later in the day when they successfully stormed and occupied the ridge. Although killed at his post during the fierce exchange of hostilities, unfaltering skill and indomitable fighting spirit in the face of fanatic opposition, contributed materially to the ultimate conquest of this vital enemy stronghold, and his undaunted courage and decisive conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
